INFORMATION & INSTRUCTIONS
Taxiing for most aircraft is mostly a very easy task for a pilot. The best way to learn how to taxi is to watch the video above. There's no specific step-by-step instructions to follow, but merely a set of rules and guidelines for commercial aircraft:
Key Rules and Guidelines:
Use to Taxi: Tiller (however, you will most likely only be able to use the rudder).
General Speed: 15-20 knots (though often pilots travel at 20-30 knots)
This is generally 15-20% throttle.
Corner Speed: 10-15 knots
Before Taxiing:
1. Turn on the Taxi Lights, Anti-Collision Lights and Navigation Lights. During the night, also turn on your Logo Lights and Wing Lights.
2. Turn on the Fasten Seat Belt Sign.
3. Set your flaps to the correct position (e.g. Boeing 737-800 is generally 5 degrees).
During Taxiing:
- Keep an eye on your speed.
- Try to reduce throttle when you need to slow down (i.e. bends), rather than brake.
- Take wide swings when going round corners to ensure you line up with the taxi line.
- Maintain at least 5 knots when going around a corner to prevent the aircraft from stopping.
- Do not hold down the brake, tap it when needed as generally braking is heavy on aircraft.
